Mayor Scott Gillingham has named Colleen Mayer as his choice to replace St. Norbert-Seine River Coun. Markus Chambers as chair of the Winnipeg Police Board.
Mayer, a citizen appointee who has been serving as the board's vice‑chair and interim chair, is the chief administrative officer for the Rural Municipality of Armstrong and a former Progressive Conservative MLA for St. Vital.
"Colleen Mayer has played a key role as vice-chair on the Police Board, helping hire the new chief and build the new strategic plan," Gillingham said in an emailed statement Tuesday.
"I served alongside her, and I'm confident her experience and background in public administration will provide stable leadership as the board puts this plan into action."
The Winnipeg Police Board is the civilian body that oversees the Winnipeg Police Service and sets priorities through its strategic plan.
Chambers resigned as police board chair and board member earlier this fall, citing personal health reasons after five years as chair and seven years on the board.
He was the longest‑serving chairperson since the board was created, having been appointed in 2018. He oversaw the service through the COVID-19 pandemic, the fallout from George Floyd's murder and the search for a new chief of police.
Mayer's appointment as chair still requires formal approval by city council.
