'Generous' local business help establish 'new tradition' for village

Thanks to the generosity of local businesses, a tree has stood proudly near the junction of Hamilton Avenue and Bridgnorth Road this festive season, after the village had gone without in recent years.

The tree, donated by popular independent garden centre, Websters of Wollaston, dons decorations from Wollaston residents and is hopefully set to become an annual feature once again.

"It is wonderful to see the village have its own tree again," said former councillor turned local campaigner, Lois Bramall. "In years gone by, there was one on Wollaston Island, which was a testament to the hard work of my late colleague and friend, June Collins.

"I do hope that the new tree on Bridgnorth Road is the start of a new festive tradition for Wollaston."

Current ward councillor, Andrew Tromans, added: "After sharing Stacy Hammond's Christmas Card design on Facebook, I was inundated with requests for the village to have its own tree.

"Whilst it wasn't possible to have one on the island due to short notice, it is fantastic to have one opposite the Spar shop.

"I would like to thank the local businesses who stepped up and, of course, my colleague, David Sheppard, who helped me install the tree in the dark and cold."

The tree has managed to survive the wet, blustery December weather, thanks to donations from the Home and Hardware Store, which enabled the tree to be stook back up after being blown over at the start of the month, exemplifying the community spirit the tree represents.
