Dermatologists Say Creams With These Ingredients Actually Reduce Under-Eye Bag Puffiness

We asked dermatologists what ingredients actually work (and tried them for ourselves).

Whether you had a late night out (count #1: guilty), one more margarita than you meant to (count #2: guilty), or you've simply noticed your eyes looking a little puffier than they used to when you wake up (count #3: guilty), investing in a good under-eye bag cream might be worth considering. I was never really an eye cream person until the past couple of years, but now that I'm in my mid-20s, my frontal lobe is fully developed, and I'm (unfortunately) not getting enough sleep most nights. Hence why an under-eye bag cream has become my new favorite skincare step.

Let's get one thing straight, though: Under-eye bags are extremely common -- nothing to be ashamed of and nothing you have to treat. In fact, under-eye bags can be caused by "genetics and natural aging -- because skin loses elasticity and fat pads shift -- as well as fluid retention from salty foods, alcohol, or lack of sleep; allergies or sinus issues; chronic rubbing or irritation of the eyes; or lifestyle factors like smoking or prolonged sun exposure," says dermatologist Ariel Ostad, MD. It's a long list, but it just goes to show that plenty of people are in the same puffy-eyed boat.

That said, if you're not loving your ~baggage~ and want to address it, an eye cream for bags can help. The key is patience and consistency, though. "Most creams need at least four to six weeks of regular use to show lasting results, though some depuffing effects can be visible within minutes," says dermatologist Mona A. Gohara, MD. "Apply once or twice daily -- morning for instant tightening, night for repair and renewal." For full transparency: Even the best under-eye bag creams won't completely erase puffiness (the only permanent solution is surgery), but they can noticeably reduce the appearance of bags both immediately and over time.

If you're looking to fast-track results, Dr. Gohara also recommends storing your eye cream -- or even a metal spoon -- in the fridge to help reduce puffiness quickly. "Sleeping slightly elevated can also prevent fluid from pooling under the eyes overnight," she adds. Keep reading for our insider tips and the very best under-eye bag creams worth your money.
