Irish consumers have been issued a series of warnings as numerous products sold in shops, supermarkets and online were recalled this week due to safety concerns.
Every week, the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) product safety officers carry out inspections on various items sold in Ireland to ensure they adhere to safety standards.
These checks can be unannounced and encompass a variety of products, including toys, electrical goods, and gas appliances. If products are found not meeting safety standards, CCPC officers utilise their statutory powers to ensure these items are taken off the shelves to safeguard consumers and mitigate further risk.
This week, the CCPC revealed that several popular items bought by Irish shoppers online have been recalled over safety fears, including chargers and children's toys. The full list of recalled items can be found below.
Chargers sold on Shein
A selection of chargers sold on Shein have been recalled due to potential risks of electric shock, fire and injury.
The CCPC announced on Tuesday that online marketplace Shein has initiated a recall for eight different chargers sold by third-party sellers on the platform to customers in Ireland.
As per the consumer watchdog, these products pose a risk of electric shock, fire and injury due to poor insulation, lack of thermal protection, faulty earthing, and missing or incorrect ratings. The details of the affected products can be found below:.
The CCPC has urged anyone who bought one of these products to "please stop use immediately and discard the product".
Shein has reached out to all impacted customers via email and through the app.
Anyone wishing to contact Shein for a refund or with concerns about this product can reach customer services at eurcsteam@shein. com.
Children's toys available on Temu
The CCPC also issued several product safety alerts this week for children's toys available on the Temu platform.
The warnings concern various toy products that have raised choking and chemical concerns.
The first affected item is the Cat Paw Squishy toy sold by KRAIDAY on Temu, with the CCPC flagging a chemical hazard due to potential exposure to restricted phthalates exceeding permitted levels. This could harm children's health by affecting their reproductive system.
Approximately 103 affected products are in the Republic of Ireland.
Additionally, a safety concern has been identified with a Musical Rattle Toy sold by Musical Dreamer on Temu. This safety alert concerns a choking hazard as the item contains small components that could detach and be placed in a young child's mouth.
The brand in question is Unknown, with the model type/number being W0007 - green. The batch number is 20240330, and approximately 74 products are affected in the Republic of Ireland.
Another toy posing a choking risk is a Plush Toy White Duck sold by Claires on the Temu platform.
Like the Musical Rattle Toy, small parts could detach from this toy, making them a potential ingestion hazard for young children. The bar code is 3132347210, the batch number is 2024/04/20 and the Product ID is 601099783878366.
Approximately 6 products are affected in the Republic of Ireland.
In all cases, customers have been advised to stop using these toys immediately and keep them out of reach of children.
Meanwhile, Dunnes Stores has recalled its Sage and Herbes De Provence due to safety concerns.
The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) announced that several recall notices were issued this week for food products sold in supermarkets across Ireland.
Dunnes Stores recalled one of its spices after it was found to pose a potential choking hazard.
A Food Safety Alert was issued for a batch of Dunnes Stores Herbes De Provence due to the possible presence of large pieces of stalk and bark.
The specific batch affected has the batch code "L25315225" and a best before date of September 2027.
The supermarket chain also recalled a batch of sage as it poses a choking hazard.
A recall notice has been issued for Dunnes Stores Sage due to the potential presence of large pieces of stalk and bark, which could present a choking hazard. Recall notices will be displayed at point-of-sale.

Retailers have been asked to remove the affected batches from sale and display recall notices at point-of-sale. Meanwhile, consumers are being advised not to consume the implicated batches.
In addition to this, shoppers were also urged this week to check their homes after an urgent recall was issued for a popular breakfast item.
Consumers are being warned not to eat a specific batch of Nutrilean Chocolate Brownie Overnight Oats due to a contamination scare.
The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) confirmed that Listeria monocytogenes was detected in a batch of these overnight oats, priced at €3.95.
The affected pack has a best before date of 25/11/2025.
Listeria monocytogenes is a type of bacteria that can cause serious illness in some people.
The FSAI explained: "Symptoms of Listeria monocytogenes infection can include mild flu-like symptoms, or gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. In rare cases, the infection can be more severe, causing serious complications.
"Some people are more vulnerable to Listeria monocytogenes infections, including pregnant women, babies, and people with weakened immune systems, including the elderly. The incubation period (time between initial infection and first symptoms appearing) is on average three weeks but can range between three and 70 days."
Shops have been told to pull the affected batch from shelves and put up notices at the point of sale.
Wholesalers and distributors are also being asked to notify customers and ensure the batch is recalled.
Shoppers are being urged not to consume the affected batch.
