Pope Leo XIV expressed solidarity with typhoon victims in the Philippines.
"I express my closeness to the people of the Philippines who have been hit by a violent typhoon: I pray for the deceased and their families, as well as for the injured and displaced," he said.
The country is still recovering from the deadly Typhoon "Tino" (International name: Kalmaegi) which killed 224 in the Philippines and five in Vietnam as it faces another tropical cyclone, Super Typhoon Uwan (International name: Fung-wong).
Uwan is the 21st cyclone to hit the country this year.
More than a million have evacuated vulnerable areas ahead of Super Typhoon Fung-wong's projected landfall in Aurora province on Sunday night, with officials urging residents to heed evacuation orders.
Uwanis expected to head northwest from Monday and then north by Tuesday, remaining at typhoon intensity, said weather bureau PAGASA.
By Wednesday, it is projected to move towards the Taiwan Strait, weakening before landfall in western Taiwan on Thursday. It is then forecast to lose strength rapidly before emerging over the waters of Ryukyu Islands as a weak tropical system.
