757Teamz track and field preview: Grassfield, Bayside stars return seeking more state titles

Grassfield junior Sophie Rambo has now won nine individual titles after adding to her list when she won the 500 and 300 meters at the Class 6 state indoor meet. She finished the indoor season ranked first nationally in the 500 (1 minute, 12.04 seconds) and seventh in the 300 (37.84 seconds). She recently finished second in the 400 at the New Balance Nationals Indoor meet in Boston. Her time of 53.31 is the second-fastest time in the nation this season.

757 dominance in girls track

A team from Hampton Roads has either won or finished runner-up in the larger classifications every year since 1986. Grassfield won the Class 6 title last season and finished runner-up in 2023. The Grizzlies will try to keep the streak going.

Salvodon goes for more records

Bayside senior Andrew Salvodon continues to dazzle. During the indoor season, he set a new national record in the 500 meters when he ran 1:00.49 to beat Olympic gold medalist Quincy Wilson at the VA Showcase. His time is 10th on the all-time world list and the eighth-fastest time ever by an American. In his final indoor race, he became the second-fastest high school indoor runner ever in the 400 meters when he ran 45.84 seconds. He finished the indoor season ranked first nationally in the 500 and seventh in the 300 (33.76). Now, he sets his eyes on the Virginia outdoor record for the 400 meters, which is 45.25 seconds set by former Wilson star and Olympian LaShawn Merritt in 2004 when he competed at the IAAF World Junior Championships.

Warriors goes for a three-peat

The Kecoughtan boys have won back-to-back Class 5 outdoor titles. But it could be difficult to win a third as they have to contend with Peninsula District rival Woodside, which won the Class 5 state indoor championship.

Several teams hope to complete state track sweep

Woodside's boys (Class 5), Grafton's boys (Class 3) and Bruton's boys (Class 2) try to complete the indoor and outdoor track championship sweep. This will be the second consecutive season if the Panthers are successful.
