Canal+ has hit the ground running at DStv with new content, features, free channel upgrades, and hardware price cuts since acquiring the broadcaster's parent company, MultiChoice. The French firm gained effective control over MultiChoice Group in mid-September 2025 after its takeover offer became unconditional.
Canal+ CEO and MultiChoice chairman Maxime Saada promised subscribers that they could expect the best content on the planet and the best service levels as a result of the merger of the two businesses. "We want to make it as convenient, as pleasant, as possible as a user experience for our subscribers to access all this great content," Saada said during a media call following the takeover. "From American companies, from companies all over the world, as well as the local sports and general entertainment content."enabled customers to use their DStv Rewards Coins to pay their monthly bills through the MyDStv App, effective 14 October 2025. MultiChoice CEO for PayTV South Africa, Byron du Plessis, told MyBroadband that customers had redeemed more than 1.6 million coins to partially or fully pay for their subscriptions within a month. Usage of the rewards programme was also surging 83% week-on-week, showing increased interest in the offering. Coins can be earned by completing certain challenges and spinning a virtual wheel on the MyDStv Rewards app. Coins can also be used for entertainment vouchers, event tickets, and discounts on BoxOffice rentals and Showmax memberships. The next big development came on the content side, with Canal+ adding French Ligue 1 live coverage to SuperSport from Another win on the content front was SuperSport securing the broadcasting rights to the CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 25. DStv followed up with a trip down memory lane with its Open Time weekend, which allowed all decoder subscribers on Axxess, Family, Compact, and Compact Plus from 7 to 9 November 2025. The original Open Time was a two-hour period from 17:00 to 19:00 every day, in which MultiChoice opened up its primary channel M-Net to analogue TV viewers for free.The latest Open Time promotion meant that DStv subscribers paying as little as R139 per month could enjoy several major live events, including the Springboks playing against Japan. Customers already on the top-end Premium bouquet were also given two additional concurrent streams on DStv Stream on any devices. Immediately after the Open Time weekend, DStv followed up with Thol-iUpsize, which provides decoder customers on lower-end packages with extended upgrades to higher-end bouquets at no charge. Until December 2025, Access and Family subscribers have been upgraded to Compact for free until 31 December 2025. Compact and Compact Plus customers have access DStv Premium decoder customers continue to have access to up to four concurrent streams, allowing more family and friends to enjoy content over the holiday on the same package. For DStv Stream customers, the company is offering additional DStv Rewards during the period. As part of its 30th Birthday Celebration, the broadcaster has also cut prices on its entry-level decoder. On the DStv online store, the Model 10S Single View HD decoder is currently available for R299 standalone and R699 with installation. DStv is also relaunching its online store later in November 2025 to make it easier for customers to buy its hardware and products and get them delivered to their doorstep.MultiChoice has also secured a key partnership with Discovery Bank, which could help it recover some of the many Premium subscribers it has lost in recent years. Discovery Bank recently announced that DStv customers would be able to get up to 50% back in Discovery Miles on their subscription payments from April next year. Discovery Bank's primary customer base consists of higher-income individuals, many of which can afford DStv Premium. Growing its Premium customer base is key to MultiChoice's financial performance, as it brings in a higher average revenue per user than its other products. DStv subscribers can expect more changes in the near future, including the integration of Canal+, DStv, and Showmax into a single platform.
