Brussels sprouts on the menu for King's special festive edition of Countryfile

The King will appear on a festive edition of Countryfile that will feature Brussels sprouts being harvested at Highgrove.

Part of the BBC episode was filmed at Highgrove Gardens on the King's Gloucestershire estate, which has been transformed into a Christmas wonderland.

Presenter Matt Baker was filmed chatting to the monarch about the King's commitment to the preservation of heritage crafts before joining Highgrove's head gardener to pick royal Brussels sprouts in the walled vegetable garden.

Meanwhile, co-presenter Adam Henson joins a local farmer shepherding his Shropshire sheep on to the estate's wildflower meadow for grazing before the royal chef prepares a feast of turkey and home-grown sprouts.

On the show, Baker and the King are seen chatting to three students from The King's Foundation's furniture-making education programme.

Yunseol Yeum, Lily Hitchcock and Miles Hobden and their colleagues created a series of six bespoke wooden tree decorations for the King who then uses Lily's creation to decorate the tree outside the gardens' dedicated entertaining space, the Orchard Room, for the public to enjoy.

The Snowdon School of Furniture offers courses in fine furniture-making and woodworking.

The King, who is passionate about rural life and the British countryside, has appeared on Countryfile several times, guest editing an episode in 2013 that focused on sustainable farming.

In 2017, he was in an episode about Dumfries House, the headquarters of The King's Foundation, explaining why he stepped in to save it for the nation and how it benefits the local community.

Highgrove has for decades been the King's private sanctuary, gradually evolving and expanding to incorporate his love of organic farming.

Since 2021, it has also been home to a craft training base operating in converted outbuildings that are buzzing with students studying everything from fine woodworking to textiles.

The King spoke last year about the "battle" to maintain such "timeless skills", noting: "They are all rather disappearing."

His foundation offers education courses for almost 15,000 students and acts as the custodian of Highgrove Gardens.

The monarch's star turn on Countryfile follows a recent appearance on a special edition of The Repair Shop, when he showcased the work of the students and spoke about heritage crafts.
