A three-year-old leopard has died at the Bannerghatta Biological Park (BBP) due to collapsed lungs and cardiomegaly (Hydrothorax and cardiac myopathy).
The BBP said that the leopard had stopped eating since October 30 following which a blood sample was taken and sent for examination.
"The animal had a high temperature, dullness and anorexia. After one week of treatment, the leopard started having feed again in little quantity. The oral medications were given in the meat. On November 13, it again stopped taking feed. A blood sample was collected and sent for the examination and treatment began again," the BBP said.
However, the leopard was recumbent and succumbed on November 19 due to large quantities of blood tinge fluid accumulated in the thorax and abdomen causing collapse of lungs and cardiomegaly.
The BBP said that the visceral samples have been collected and sent to IAH&VB Lab for further examination.
When the leopard was a three-month-old cub, it was rescued from the BRT Tiger Reserve, Chamarajanagar district, in January 2023.
The death of the leopard comes on the heels of the death of 31 blackbucks in the Kittur Rani Channamma Zoo in Bhutaramanahatti, Belagavi district, due to bacterial infection.
