Work begins on 80 units in affordable housing scheme in Esch-Belval

The project, which has cost the state over €49 million, is set to be completed by the end of 2028

Construction has begun on 80 new housing units as part of an affordable housing scheme in Esch-Belval, the government said on Wednesday.

The project is set to be completed by the end of 2028, the finance and housing ministries said in a joint press release.

The 80 units have been bought by the state for just over €49 million under the government's Vente en État de Futur Achèvement (VEFA) scheme, under which the state purchases units that are in the planning or construction phase in a bid to stimulate the housing market.

The VEFA scheme was launched by the previous government in 2023, but was continued by the new CSV-DP coalition, which has allocated €480 million for the purchase of 800 units across the country until 2027.

VEFA was launched by the previous government in September 2023, but the new government has continued it and increased the allocation to €480 million for the purchase of 800 units.

"To date, of the €480 million budget allocated to this programme, approximately €200 million has been committed to the acquisition of 328 units. In addition, reservation contracts have been signed for approximately €106 million for the acquisition of 157 units," the ministries said in their statement on Wednesday.
