TSN's Mark Masters first revealed the pregame ritual in an interview on Dec. 22, shortly before Martin and Team Canada departed for Minnesota.
"It's been a thing since he was about 14," his mom, Sheryl Martin, told Postmedia during Canada's first game of the tournament. "Two chocolate-glazed donuts. If he says it's donuts, it's donuts."
It's not a superstition so much as fuel -- sugar for a player whose motor never seems to shut off -- and it's one that has followed Martin from his family's dairy farm to the OHL, the NHL, and now the world junior championship.
On Boxing Day in Minnesota, even without his usual Tim Hortons, Martin powered onto the scoresheet.
