UK households in 26 areas urged to put blanket over freezer this week

An Arctic blast is set to make the UK shiver over the next few days and the Met Office has some unusual advice for homeowners in the event of an emergency caused by the freezing conditions. According to the national weather agency, when extreme cold hits the nation, it can cause problems with the electricity supply, leading to outages.

It's estimated as many as 26 UK areas could face power cuts due to a 15-hour snowstorm starting today (Tuesday), and households are being told the wintry conditions could bring potential disruption across various areas of Scotland, with travel affected and power supplies at risk too.

The Met Office has yellow weather warnings across almost all of Scotland, with the exception of some parts of the east and west coast, and Glasgow and Edinburgh. The warnings are for ice and snow, some of which end on Wednesday. Warnings remain for north Scotland and the Hebrides until Thursday.
