Murrysville area: Veterans dinner, used book sale and more

The Mother of Sorrows "Boomers & Beyond" speaker series will feature Dr. Sabato Stile and Michael Flaherty at its Nov. 11 meeting, discussing "Alcohol and Alcohol-Use Disorder."

The presentation will focus on the impact of alcohol use on the brain, healthy drinking versus problem drinking, and alcohol-use disorders. It will also touch on treatment, recovery and community strategies.

Stile is a board-certified psychiatrist. Flaherty is a clinical psychologist. Stile has served as medical director for multiple treatment programs and is a past president of the Pennsylvania Psychiatric Association. Flaherty is the former director of the St. Francis Institute for Psychiatry and Addiction Services, and is the founder of the Institute for Research, Education and Training in the Addictions.

The presentation will begin at noon at Mother of Sorrows, 4202 Old William Penn Highway in Murrysville. There is no cost to attend. Attendees can bring a bag lunch and a friend.

Delmont Resident of the Year nominations

Delmont officials are taking nominations for their Resident of the Year Awards, which will include adult and youth winners.

Nominees must be a current Delmont resident for the full year during which they are nominated. They cannot be an elected official or borough employee, and should have improved the borough through selfless acts of service without personal gain or compensation.

Paper nomination forms are available at the borough office, 77 Greensburg Street, and online at DelmontBoro.com

The winners will be announced at the borough's "Holidaze" celebration, Nov. 22 at the Rose Wigfield Parklet on Greensburg Street.

The East Suburban Artists League will welcome artist and guest speaker Libby Scutt at its Nov. 6 meeting.

Scutt harvests and refines local clay into ceramic materials, and will explain her process and how she works around potential pitfalls. Scutt primarily uses terr sigillata, a type of fine clay that creates a smooth finish and was historically used in ancient Roman pottery.

Her presentation will be at 7 p.m. at Christ's Lutheran Church, 5330 Old Logans Ferry Road in Murrysville. The public is invited to attend.

Veterans dinner

The Norwin Elks will host a Nov. 6 dinner for veterans and active-duty personnel including National Guard and reservists, in honor of the Veterans Day holiday.

The lodge will serve a complimentary spaghetti dinner from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at the lodge, 135 Elks Lane in Irwin. Reservations are requested, especially for groups of five or more. Reservations can only be held for 15 minutes.

Fundraiser for horse rescue farm

The Pleasant Valley Rescue Ranch will host a fundraiser to help collect donations for veterinary care of its horses on Nov. 16.

"Rein In the Magic of Christmas" will take place from 1-4 p.m. Nov. 16 at the ranch, 2205 Pleasant Valley Road in Murrysville. The cost is $20 per car.

Participants can meet the farm's rescue horses, enjoy hot dogs and baked goods, and hear live music by The Hawthorns. There will also be basket raffles.

All proceeds go to horse veterinary care. The ranch provides a foster home and palliative care for unwanted horses.

Delmont budget planning sessions

Delmont council will host a second fall planning session for the 2026 budget.

It will be at 6 p.m. Nov. 6 at the borough building, 77 Greensburg Street. Council will go over revenues and expenditures, making adjustments along the way and discussing various aspects of next year's budget.

The Murrysville branch of the American Association of University Women is collecting gently used books and puzzles for its fall book and puzzle sale.

The sale benefits the library and the AAUW's speaker series, and will be held Nov. 6-8 at the library.

Donations will be accepted through Oct. 31. The following will not be accepted: musty or moldy books, encyclopedias, magazines, textbooks and puzzles with missing pieces.

Leaf collection

The Murrysville officials announced curb-side leaf collection dates for the fall. Collections will take place Nov. 8, Nov. 22 and Dec. 6.

To schedule a pick-up, residents must fill out a registration form at Murrysville.com. There is a 20-bag limit for each collection date. The deadline to sign up is the Thursday prior to collection.

Fitness franchise F45 Training is opening a branch in Murrysville. Founded in Australia, the chain has expanded to more than 3,000 locations in 64 countries, and combines several exercise disciplines into high-energy group workout sessions.

The Murrysville location will be in the Murrysville SportZone at 4491 School Road South. Classes are typically 45 minutes. Owners Logan Summerhill and Aidan Carlisle said they plan to open in mid-October. To celebrate the opening, they are offering a limited-time VIP experience for $45, which includes two weeks unlimited access to the studio in advance of the official opening.
