The Bahamas was again listed as a major drug transit country by the United States.
In its Presidential Determination for fiscal year 2026 on Major illicit Drug Transit and Major Illicit Drug Producing Countries, The Bahamas was one of 23 countries named.
"A country's presence on the foregoing list is not necessarily a reflection of its government's counterdrug efforts or level of cooperation with the United States," the US Department of State said in a media note.
Among the listed reasons counties are placed on the list are the "combination of geographic, commercial, and economic factors that allow drugs or precursor chemicals to be transited or produced, even if a government has engaged in robust and diligent narcotics control and law enforcement measures."
Last week, US Ambassador to The Bahamas nominee Herschel Walker said the increase in drug smuggling is one of the issues that he hopes to tackle if he is confirmed as the next ambassador.
