One of Britain's best markets can be found in an underrated Birmingham suburb - Birmingham Live

You might assume that you'd need to venture in the countryside to find the very best farmers market, but this one is a bus ride from the city centre

A farmers market in a south Birmingham suburb has been named among the top three in Britain.

The Farm Retail Awards has listed Kings Norton Farmers Market among the best in Britain alongside one in London's Queens Park and a second in the old market town of West Malling in Kent.

The Kings Norton Farmers Market impressed judges with its 'commitment to local produce and supporting local economies, as well as creating enjoyable and engaging shopping experiences while promoting fresh, sustainable food."

The Kings Norton Farmers Market runs on the second Saturday of the month on the neighbourhood's green, offering 'a taste of country in the city'.

More than 25 producers trade there each month, offering a mix of meat, fish, fruit, vegetables, cheese, wines, coffee, condiments and more.

There's been a market on Kings Norton Green since 1616, dating back to a Royal Charter from King James I.

The current set-up is a not-for-profit, non-political group with a focus on simply providing locals with fresh, quality produce.

The Farm Retail Awards are judged by other farm retailers with a passion for markets, farm shops and pick-your-own enterprises.

Emma Mosey, chair of the Farm Retail Association, said: "Farmers Markets are at the heart of their communities, connecting people directly with the producers who grow and make their food.

"They give farmers and producers a vital local route to market, showcasing the very best of fresh, seasonal produce. More than just a place to shop, Farmers Markets bring communities together, strengthen local economies and champion sustainable food.

"This award celebrates the very best of these markets and the role they play in keeping our food culture alive and thriving."

Kings Norton Farmers Market goes up against Queens Park Farmers Market and West Malling Farmers Market for the top gong.

The winner will be announced at the Farm Retail Awards' annual conference in Yorkshire in March 2026.
