Lebanon defense delivers in win over Eastside

The Lebanon Pioneers played some lockdown defense in earning a 48-23 non-district boys basketball win over the Eastside Spartans on Friday night.

Lebanon led 9-2 after one quarter and 21-10 at halftime.

"We felt like it was our best defensive game of the season holding a good Eastside team to 23 points," said Lebanon coach Scotty Boyd. "We were finally back to full strength after playing three games without Michael Reece [due to an ankle injury] and then having a couple of starters with the flu during the Wise tournament."

Reece scored 15 points for Lebanon, while Layne Jessee scored all 12 of his points in the first half for the Pioneers.

Eastside had no player score more than six points.

Richlands 70, Ridgeview 57: Parker Ryder scored 28 points and tallied three steals as Richlands recorded a non-district victory over the Ridgeview Wolfpack.

A 21-9 run to open the second half put Richlands firmly in control. Wynnter Boyd (14 points, five assists, four steals, two blocks) and Max Herndon (13 points, three assists, two steals) also played well.

Cooper Hurst had eight steals, Bradley Fuller yanked down 10 rebounds and Richlands buried 12 3-pointers.

Ryan O'Quinn's 26 points and Clayton Compton's 11 points were tops for Ridgeview.

Abingdon 54, Union 47: Aaron Pomrenke stuffed the stat sheet to the tune of 15 points, eight rebounds, three steals, and three assists as the Abingdon Falcons earned an important Mountain 7 District victory at Union.

Abingdon trailed 39-38 entering the final quarter before closing the game on a 16-8 run.

Blake Ketron added a double-double with 11 points, 11 rebounds and three assists. Luke Honaker (10 points) also scored in double digits for the Falcons, who bounced back from a loss to Wise County Central the day before.

Braxton Bunch and Kam Bostic each scored 18 points for Union.

Wise County Central 77, Lee High 50: Ethan Collins fired in 25 points as Wise County Central whipped Lee High for a Mountain 7 District victory.

Collins passed Caleb Mills (1,391 points) to move into second place on Central's all-time career scoring list.

Ean Hayes (16 points, nine assists, seven rebounds) and Londen Horne (14 points, 10 rebounds) also played well in the win.

Brynnen Pendergraft had 22 points and eight rebounds for Lee.

Holston 52, Castlewood 46: Zac Cornett scored 15 points as the Holston Cavaliers edged Castlewood for a non-district victory.

Colton Hess (14 points) and Colton Woodward (11 points) also scored in double digits.

Castlewood was led by Luc Harvey's 13 points.

Graham 76, Grundy 51: Markel Ray scored 21 points to lead four Graham scorers in double digits as the G-Men opened the regular season with a win over the Grundy Golden Wave.

Cole Sexton (19 points), Ty Martin (16 points) and Channing Disibbio (10 points) also starred in the win. Graham led by 10 points after one quarter and never looked back.

Grundy was led by Keyston Hartford's 17 points. Logan Lester added 14 points for the Golden Wave, while Kyle Hunt sored 10 points.

West Ridge 58, Volunteer 48: Trey Frazier had a fine showing with 17 points as the West Ridge Wolves whipped Volunteer for a victory.

Avery Horne (13 points) and Trent Tatum (11 points) also scored in double digits.

Rural Retreat 48, Rye Cove 40: Conley Martin had a dominant 26-point, 17-rebound performance as the Rural Retreat Indians downed Rye Cove.

The game was tied at 40 through three quarters, but Rural Retreat outscored the Eagles 21-13 over the final eight minutes.

Carter Roach-Hodge scored 23 of Rye Cove's 40 points.

Hancock County 66, Thomas Walker 32: Isaiah Christian-Fodor scored 15 points as Hancock County topped Thomas Walker.

TW fell behind 34-10 at half-time. Hunter Norris led the Pioneers with 12 points.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Abingdon 54, Union 40: Lauren Baker led the way for the Abingdon Falcons with 18 points in a Mountain 7 District road win.

Annsley "A.J." Trivette added 16 points for AHS, which bounced back from Thursday's loss to Wise County Central.

Katelynn Witt led Union with 17 points, while Kynlee Johnson added 11 points.

Eastside 52, Lebanon 41: Kaylie Rasnick scored 17 points and Dakota Clay hauled down 16 rebounds as the Eastside Spartans downed Lebanon for a non-district road win.

Drew Damron (12 points, four blocks, four assists) and Brooklynn "B.J." Johnson (10 points, five steals) also scored in double digits for the crew from Coeburn.

Jaidyn Fields led Lebanon with 11 points.

Wise County Central 83, Lee High 31: Emmah McAmis scored 25 points to raise his career total to 2,460 as the Wise County Central Warriors lambasted Lee High.

McAmis became the all-time leading scorer in Wise County - male or female - last month as she continues to reach milestone after milestone. She surpassed the previous mark held by Eastside's Hannah Wyrick.

She also had three assists and three steals.

Abbie Jordan (14 points, four assists) and Aubrey Moore (13 points, five steals) also played well in the win.

Hannah Salyer pulled down 13 rebounds. All 10 players who got in the game scored for the Warriors (9-1), who led 25-0 after one quarter.

Kinley Huff scored 23 of Lee's 31 points.

Ridgeview 78, Richlands 18: Ridgeview placed four scorers in double digits - led by Danica Sutherland's 18 points - in a non-district rocking of Richlands.

Hadaya Abshire (15 points), Caylee Sykes (14 points) and Makenzie Wright (10 points) also scored in double digits.

Ridgeview led 27-6 after one quarter and 54-10 at halftime.

West Ridge 71, Volunteer 22: Carter Jones and Addison Bunn each scored 13 points as West Ridge flattened the Falcons of Volunteer.

All 12 players who got in the game scored for West Ridge.

Castlewood 39, Holston 27: Anna Summers dominated to the tune of a 20-point, 24-rebound, seven-steal masterpiece as the Castlewood Blue Devils defeated Holston.

Reann Ramsey added 13 rebounds for Castlewood.

Kinsey Bradley led Holston with 10 points.

Rye Cove 54, Rural Retreat 37: The Rye Cove Eagles came up with 15 steals in routing Rural Retreat and avenging an earlier loss to the Indians.

Jalynn Rogers added 19 points for the Cove, while Naquila Harless tallied 16 points. Lexi Shupe added five steals and four assists.
