A team of safety volunteers and officials is hard at work making Swindon's night-time streets safer.

The coordinated effort is part of the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner's Getting You Home Safe campaign, a scheme that brings together police, council teams, licensed venue staff and volunteers to help people enjoy nights out safely during the festive season.

The streets of Swindon town centre and Old Town are being patrolled by police officers, taxi marshals, neighbourhood wardens, Night Angels and street pastors, all working together to offer reassurance and direct support to those enjoying the festive nightlife.

Philip Wilkinson, Police and Crime Commissioner, said: "By bringing together police officers, local authorities, venue staff, and volunteers, we've demonstrated the practical steps being taken to keep people safe during the festive season.

"It's vital that the public sees this commitment in action, and I'm proud of the collaborative effort that makes initiatives like these highlighted by the Getting You Home Safe campaign possible."

Taxi marshals are helping vulnerable people at ranks, while street wardens are present throughout the town centre to offer support and reassurance.

Licensed venues are using the Ask for Angela scheme to offer discreet help to anyone who feels unsafe.

Street pastors and community volunteers are also on hand in key areas, offering help ranging from bottled water to guidance towards safe transport.

Visible police officers are engaging with the public, while plain-clothes teams focus on identifying and preventing predatory behaviour, particularly towards women and girls, through Project Vigilant.

Acting Inspector Winter said: "Our neighbourhood team manage the night-time economy with assistance from our response teams on a Friday and Saturday night with dedicated staff in place along with our partner agencies who help keep people safe, reduce disorder and help people get home safely.

"We also undertake offender-focused Project Vigilant deployments, which consist of plain clothes and uniformed officers searching for signs of predatory behaviour towards women and girls.

"The team then proactively intervene and robustly manage offenders."

Wiltshire Police has also rolled out a Winter of Action campaign under the Home Office's Safer Streets initiative, which aims to reduce crime and antisocial behaviour and improve safety around bars, clubs and other late-night venues during the festive season.

The coordinated safety measures will continue throughout the rest of the festive season and into the new year to support Swindon's night-time economy.
