When we started the year, a dozen Grade A large eggs cost an average of $2.52. Now? The average cost has risen to $3.65 as of November. This is almost a record high for the decade. These higher prices come as farmers continue to battle a strain of H5N1 bird flu that continues to disrupt the country's egg supply.

Why are eggs so expensive?
Bird flu is spreading through poultry flocks in the United States, and since early 2022 farmers have killed more than 125 million chickens and turkeys to try to curb the spread, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association.

Last week, officials announced that a patient in Louisiana was showing signs of the virus mutating, stoking fears that the virus could become more transmissible among humans, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced.
